Correspondence, receipts, and accounts discuss conditions in lowcountry after Civil War; including 6 letters, 5 May 1865-20 Oct. 1866, to daughter Anne Simons Deas, [Greenville, S.C.], re social conditions in Charleston and Cordesville, S.C.; destruction at Comingtee, Buck Hall, and Washington plantations along Cooper River; thoughts on emancipation; behavior of freedmen in Christ Church parish and vicinity; race relations and fights between whites and Negro troops stationed in Charleston; disappointing harvest from rice planted under sharecropping system; and mention of George Howe teaching at Kingstree and preaching at Florence, S.C. Other papers include labor contracts, 7 Sept. 1865 and 3 Mar. 1866, listing names of approximately 60 freedmen and women on Buck Hall and Washington plantations, specifying mutual obligations for raising and protecting the crop, with note describing wooden compass used for measurement of tasks; partnership agreement, 18 Apr. 1866, with Edward J. Pringle showing sales of rice; and letter, 11 May 1866, Moncks Corner, S.C., Sub Asst. Commissioner, Freedmens Bureau, requesting list of "all destitute persons, white and black" on Deas' property in danger of starvation.
